A topographic report
Description
Beneath the western wall of the Saint Sara chapel, to the left of the entrance, stands an artistically carved khachkar (cross-stone). It was brought here from a ruined cemetery located near the chapel. The khachkar is of medium size and bears no inscription; however, based on its artistic and stylistic features, it can be dated to the 11th–12th centuries.
At the center is a main cross with circular double buds at the ends of its arms. The composition is framed by a simple interlace border, which forms the cross-niche (khachkhoran). Notably, the pattern on the right side of this decorative border differs entirely from that on the left and upper sides. From the right and left corners of the cross-niche, rounded trefoils hang down toward the center.
From the base of the cross, stylized palm branches rise to the right and left. In the lower right section of the main cross, two human relief figures are still faintly visible. The figure on the left is approximately twice the size of the one on the right. Both are shown frontally in the posture of the head and torso, while their feet point to the right. The details of the high relief are difficult to discern.
