Monument
Monument type
Chapel initial, sequential and current
The chapel was founded in the 13th-14th centuries and remained active until the early 18th century. In the mid-18th century, the Armenian population of the region was forcibly displaced, and the chapel was abandoned. Later, the Muslim inhabitants who settled in the area destroyed the surrounding cemetery, using the khachkars (cross-stones) as construction material. The vaulted roof of the abandoned chapel collapsed. During the period of Armenian independence, the site became a place of pilgrimage for Armenian resettlers. Since December 2020, the Nor Shahumyan region has come under the control of Azerbaijan. There is no current information available regarding the condition of the monument.
