About us
The academic project of documenting Artsakh"s tangible cultural heritage started in June 2023 in order to study and document endangered historical and cultural monuments of the Artsakh Republic, seized and taken under the Azerbaijani control in the aftermath of the 2020 44-day war. Through thorough scientific and academic documentation, this project aims to protect the monuments of Artsakh, as far as possible, from destruction, transformation, appropriation, and from the direct danger of complete erasure and to transmit them to future generations. As a result of Azerbaijan’s attack on September 19, 2023, and the follow-up forced exodus of Armenians from the Artsakh Republic, today, the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the entire territory of the Artsakh Republic is in immediate danger. Thus, the project now includes the complete list of monuments in the Artsakh Republic. The project is funded by the association of two foundations, ALIPH (Alliance international pour la protection du patrimoine dans les zones de conflits) and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The project is implemented through the support and efforts of the Fondation INALCO (France) and Hishatakaran non-governmental organization (Armenia).
